1. Wine from any supplier, producer or agent may be entered.
2. Wine from any country may be entered into the under $25 classes.
3. Wines entered by overseas (non New Zealand) wineries must have New Zealand representation and distribution.
4. There is no restriction on the number of different wines entered from a supplier, producer, distributor or agent.
5. Any wine may be entered only once under the closure of the entrant’s choice (e.g. screwcap, cork etc.) and in the bottle format of the entrant’s choice (e.g. glass, can, plastic etc.). It cannot be duplicated with another type of closure or bottle format.
6. Any wine can only be entered once. In the situation where the same wine is bottled under 2 different labels, only one label may be entered.
7. All wines must be available in a commercial quantity, defined by varietal and price on the Class Schedule.
8. The normal day-to-day invoice price without terms or promotional discounts to Foodstuffs of any bottle of wine entered in the under $25 classes as at Monday 5 August 2019 cannot exceed $16.40 excluding GST.
9. The normal day-to-day invoice price without terms or promotional discounts to Foodstuffs of any bottle of wine entered in the over $25 classes as at Monday 5 August 2019 must be over $16.40 excluding GST.
10. Wines that retail over $25 can only be entered into classes that specify ‘over $25’ on the Class Schedule.
11. Only wines made solely from grapes eligible for entry. Due to the Sale & Supply of Alcohol Act and the Off Licenses granted to New World stores, grape wine is defined as “the product of the complete or partial fermentation of fresh grapes, or a mixture of that product and products derived solely from grapes.”
12. Entries must be lodged online at registration.wineshow.co.nz or on the New World Wine Awards 2019 entry spreadsheet supplied by the Competition Director. The entry spreadsheet can be requested by emailing email@example.com
13. Entry fee per wine is NZ$80.00 plus GST.
14. An invoice with payment instructions will be issued on Tuesday 25 June 2019. Payment must be received by Friday 12 July 2019. Entries will be withdrawn or results withheld if payment is not received by the due date.
15. For existing Foodstuffs North Island suppliers, entry fees may be offset against the next payment from Foodstuffs North Island.
16. Withdrawals must be notified to the Competition Director at firstname.lastname@example.org
17. Entry fees for withdrawn wines already invoiced will not be refunded for withdrawals made after the payment date of 12 July.
18. By entering the New World Wine Awards entrants agree to receive emails updating them on the competition. Recipients can unsubscribe to these emails at any time.
19. Foodstuffs NZ will hold entrant’s email addresses in a database for future marketing and promotional purposes of the New World Wine Awards entry process. This database may be securely shared with Foodstuffs agencies and third party suppliers for this purpose.
20. By submitting an entry into the New World Wine Awards, you agree to be bound by the terms and conditions of the competition.
Samples and Judging
21. Confirmation of entries, entry fee invoice and sample bottle instructions will be emailed to entrants on Monday 24 June 2019.
22. The final date for receipt of wine samples is Friday 12 July 2019.
23. Arrangements can be made with the Competition Director for receiving late samples of new vintage bottlings until Friday 26 July.
24. While every effort will be made to ensure wines are judged in the correct class, it is the entrant’s responsibility to ensure that the wine is entered into the correct class and subclass. The competition organisers reserve the right to move a wine to a more suitable class if this is deemed necessary.
25. It is the entrant’s responsibility to ensure the wine and vintage as completed on the entry form is the wine that is entered and labelled for judging.
26. It is the entrant’s responsibility to ensure that wines to be judged are received by the due date.
27. It is the entrant’s responsibility to pay excise duty that is charged on imported samples.
28. Four samples of each wine packaged in 750ml or 375ml bottles are required for judging. Twelve samples of each wine packaged in cans or bottles less than 375ml are required for judging
29. All sample bottles submitted for the competition become the property of Foodstuffs NZ. Despite requesting the least number possible, there are always a number of bottles of wine that are excess to requirement. Last year these excess bottles were auctioned resulting in $21,000 being donated to the Starship Children’s Hospital charity.
30. No tank or barrel samples are permitted.
31. The wine supplied for judging must be the same varietal, vintage, packaging and closure as the product made available for sale in New Zealand.
32. Each wine entered for judging must be fully consistent with all wine produced under the same label in that vintage. All entry sample bottles must be taken from, and therefore representative of, a homogeneous quantity of wine. Such wine may be produced in multiple lots or bottlings provided that:
- Every lot and/or bottling is composed of identical source materials blended in identical proportions and subjected to identical winemaking practices and processes as far as practically achievable in terms of good winemaking practice.
- Every lot and/or bottling is consistent in terms of sensory characteristics and chemical profile, allowing for analytical tolerances and the effects of maturation.
- It is fully consistent with all wine produced under that same label in that vintage and with that available in the market.
33. For non-vintage wines, the lot or batch number for the samples submitted will be recorded by the competition organisers. Any medal awarded to these wines is only applicable to the lot or batch number submitted for judging and medal stickers can only be applied to wines of this lot or batch number.
34. In some cases, such as with imported wines, multiple lot numbers may be in the marketplace. In this instance, if such a wine is selected for the Top 50 the Chair of Judges will taste the wine submitted with the wine available for supply and if they are the same Foodstuffs will proceed with the lot numbers of the supplied wine.
35. If a second bottling is required for a Top 50 wine to fulfil the volume requirement:
- Where this is the same lot number that comes from the same vintage and tank, no additional sampling is required.
- Where this is a new batch or blend, the Chair of Judges will taste the two sample bottles to ascertain whether the new batch or blend is the same quality as was judged.
36. The New World Wine Awards accepts as standard the wine packaging system of 750ml and 375ml glass bottles with a screw cap or cork closure. Suppliers of wine in other packaging systems must provide reasonable evidence to enable the Chair of Judges, Chief Steward and Competition Director to comfortably assure consumers that the wine will undergo the same level of evolution over 12 months as in a 750ml or 375ml glass bottle, which are held as standard.
37. The top scoring entries in each class will be photographed during the judging for marketing purposes.
38. In accordance with New Zealand Winegrowers combination claims, the combination referred to must be at least 85% of that wine. For example, if a label states that the wine is a ‘2016 Marlborough Pinot Noir’, then 85% of the wine must be from Pinot Noir grapes grown in Marlborough in the 2016 vintage.
39. All wine entered for judging must be of merchantable quality and comply with all relevant Food Safety legislation and standards for retail sale, including full compliance with the labelling regulations as specified in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.
40. Each entry must be presented for judging in its retail packaging.
41. Wines must be bottled and labelled as for retail sale. New vintages may be entered for judging with a temporary label. If the wine is selected for the Top 50 it must be fully labelled and available for photography by Friday 16 August 2018.
42. Cleanskin samples will not be accepted.
43. New bottlings without a final label must have a temporary label applied. Temporary labels for new vintages must include the wine name, variety, vintage, name and address of the producer and the information required by the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. A copy of the proposed label may be attached to the bottle.
44. Entries will be judged on the 100-point system.
45. Medals will be awarded on the following basis: Gold 95 points and over (95+), Silver 90 to 94 points, Bronze 85 to 89 points.
46. Wines will be judged in vintage order, younger before older.
47. Wines marketed as lower or reduced alcohol entered in Class 15 will be judged within their varietal class.
48. Over $25 wines will be judged in their varietal class with the under $25 wines.
49. Emerging varietals will be grouped by country for judging.
50. In the event of any dispute, the decision of the Chair of Judges and Foodstuffs NZ shall be final.
51. All results will be confirmed by email on Monday 5 August 2019.
52. All results are confidential and embargoed until the public embargo is lifted. The dates of lifting the public embargo for the New World Wine Awards under $25 medal results and the Premium NZ Selection over $25 medal results will be confirmed by email from the Competition Director.
From Monday 2 September 2019 wineries and suppliers can discuss their New World Wine Awards under $25 medal winning wines with New World stores ONLY.
Supply and Distribution
53. Top scoring under $25 entries each class are re-tasted and ranked by panel Chairs. The top ranked wines form the Top 50 selection. The top three wines of each varietal are then presented to the entire judging panel to determine the ten Champion wines. The entire judging panel then selects the Champion White and Champion Red wines.
54. The winery, producer or distributor (“supplier”) of the Top 50 selected wines will be emailed on Monday 5 August 2019 by the Competition Director to confirm the supplier holds the minimum stockholding requirement detailed in the Class Schedule; the wine has a normal day-to-day invoice price without terms or promotional discounts to Foodstuffs of $16.40 or under per bottle, excluding GST; if the wine is from overseas it has New Zealand representation and distribution; the wine can be supplied to Foodstuffs DC in outers of 6 bottles; the wine be made solely from grapes.
55. The suppliers of the Top 50 selection must confirm their wine meets the competition criteria by midday Wednesday 7 August 2019.
56. The Top 50 wines that meet the competition criteria will be included in the five-week NWWA promotion. They will be warehoused in Foodstuffs Distribution Centres (DC), stocked in New World liquor selling stores nationwide and promoted as part of the NWWA during the five-week promotional period.
57. For any wines selected for the Top 50 that do not meet the competition criteria, the medal awarded will still stand but the wine will be excluded from the five-week NWWA promotion. The wine will be replaced by next highest ranked wine in that varietal.
58. For all Gold medal wines scoring 95+ points that fall outside the Top 50 and are not included in the five-week NWWA promotion, Foodstuffs will inform all retail banners of this opportunity around great quality affordable wines. Suppliers will be emailed to confirm next steps on 9 August 2019.
59. For over $25 wines scoring 95+ points Foodstuffs will work with entrants to get an SAP code. New suppliers will be invited to go through the process to be set up as a Foodstuffs approved supplier. Wineries will then be able to approach all Foodstuffs banner stores (New World, Pak’NSave, 4 Square, Henry’s, Gilmours, Trents) to stock their wines. Foodstuffs will also communicate the details of these wines and their SAP codes to all banners stores to make them aware of the opportunity on Gold 95+ over $25 wines.
60. Suppliers of Top 50 wines being featured five-week NWWA promotion will be sent a confirmation email with full instructions for new supplier approval (if required), ProductFlow or Data eXpress (DEX) submission on Thursday 8 August.
61. New suppliers to Foodstuffs must complete the required Foodstuffs Compliance Pack and provide with this a copy of their current food certification and their GS1 ProductRecallnz registration certificate. Failure by new suppliers to provide the completed Foodstuffs Compliance documentationby 5pm on Friday 16 August 2019will lead to that wine being withdrawn from the five-week NWWA promotion.
62. New suppliers who do not currently hold their own food certification acceptable to Foodstuffs must be willing to meet the requirements of Interim Approval and obtain the necessary certification over a specified time period; this may include being audited against Foodstuffs Importer/Broker Standard.
63. Each Top 50 wine must be set up either via GS1 ProductFlow or Data eXpress (DEX). The required information must be submitted by 5pm on Friday 16 August 2019.
64. Failure to submit ProductFlow or Data eXpress (DEX) information by 5pm on Friday 16 August 2019 will lead to that wine being withdrawn from the five-week NWWA promotion.
65. All Top 50 wines being warehoused in Foodstuffs DCs that are produced in 750ml bottles must be supplied in outer cartons of 6 bottles. All cartons must have an outer shipper barcode.
66. The minimum stockholding stated on the Class Schedule must be available in New Zealand by Friday 13 September 2019 to allow for order placement and delivery to Foodstuffs DC.
67. Actual order, delivery date and delivery details will be confirmed by the relevant Replenishment Buyer during week commencing 16 September 2019.
68. All Top 50 wines being warehoused in Foodstuffs DC must be received at the DC by Wednesday 25September 201.
69. Failure to supply stock in required quantities by the required date may result in penalties to recover costs.
70. For Top 50 wines that are already stocked in any Foodstuffs DC, the supplier is responsible for clearing incorrect vintage stock as notified by the relevant Replenishment Buyer. Two weeks’ notice will be given to clear this incorrect vintage stock.
71. For Top 50 wines that are already stocked in any New World store, the supplier is responsible for swapping incorrect vintage stock for the correct vintage awarded a medal in the 2019 judging. This is to be done as soon as email confirmation is received of the wine’s selection for NWWA five-week promotion. Any credit notes for this activity must be issued directly to the store, not to Foodstuffs.
72. The Top 50 wines featured in the NWWA five-week promotion will be core ranged in New World stores for the five-week promotional period, promoted during the Christmas trading period and performance will be reviewed by the FSNI and FSSI category teams in January / February 2020. If the wine is not performing and needs to be removed from the DC the category teams will:
- work with the supplier on additional promotional activity within New World
- if this isn’t successful the wine will be offered to other retail banners within Foodstuffs
- if this isn’t successful the stock will need to be returned to the supplier within a reasonable timeframe. Foodstuffs guarantees it will not return stock that has been held in the DC for more than 12 months.
Price Promotion, Medal Stickers & Marketing Promotion
73. The Top 50 wines being featured in NWWA five-week promotion are expected to be supported by the supplier with price promotions to enable the wines to be featured in the weekly New World mailer and in national advertising. This price promotion activity will be negotiated with FSNI Liquor Category Manager and FSSI Liquor Promotions Manager.
74. The Top 50 wines will feature in an extensive national marketing campaign and in New World stores for the five-week promotional period. The cost of being featured in this advertising material is$1,500 plus GST for each wine selected. Acceptance of these Conditions of Entry indicates acceptance of this marketing contribution. This marketing contribution will be invoiced to the supplier.
75. The marketing contribution covers the wine’s inclusion in all national marketing material including the NWWA catalogues, in NWWA themed pages in the New World weekly mailers and in NWWA themed displays in each wine-selling New World during the five-week promotional period.
76. The marketing contribution does not cover:
- Wine being featured in the normal liquor pages of the NW mailers. This will be charged at the usual co-op rate.
- Display fees charged by individual New World stores for featuring wines in dedicated liquor promotional areas (for example aisle ends, side stacks) where this is NOT part of the NWWA themed display.
- Foodstuffs South Island ‘display all stores’ programme. Suppliers of Top 50 wines will be offered this opportunity.
77. After the five-week promotional period, normal co-op charges apply to Top 50 wines featured in the New World mailer and other negotiated activity.
78. Suppliers of Top 50 wines are asked to assist in promoting their wines by agreeing to a link to their winery website from the New World website.
79. Suppliers of Top 50 wines are expected to make available enough product, free of charge, to allow these wines to be tasted and promoted to customers in New World stores through complimentary instore sampling, as requested by the Foodstuffs liquor category teams, New World Liquor Managers or Owner Operators.
80. Suppliers of Top 50 wines are expected to make available enough product, free of charge, to be tasted and promoted to New World Liquor Managers and Owner Operators at store launch events to promote the 2019 New World Wine Awards, as requested by the individual Foodstuffs liquor category teams. Foodstuffs undertakes to keep this request to a reasonable volume.
81. Suppliers of Top 50 wines are expected to support tastings at media outlets as requested by Foodstuffs NZ PR.
82. Suppliers of Top 50 wines are expected to make available up to 24 bottles, free of charge, for samples to promote the New World Wine Awards with influential wine writers through targeted PR activity.
83. New World Wine Awards Gold, Silver & Bronze medal stickers and the Premium NZ Selection Gold, Silver and Bronze medal stickers can only be applied to the brand, wine, varietal, vintage, packaging and closure submitted and judged in the New World Wine Awards and cannot be transferred to any other brand, wine, variety or vintage.
84. New World Wine Awards Gold, Silver and Bronze medal stickers and the Premium NZ Selection Gold, Silver and Bronze medal stickers can only be applied to wines as per the confirmation of results emailed on 5 August 2019.
85. For non-vintage wines, medal stickers can only be applied to wines of the same lot or batch number as those submitted for judging.
86. New World Wine Awards Gold, Silver and Bronze medal stickers and the Premium NZ Selection Gold, Silver and Bronze medal stickers can only be applied after the lifting of the public embargo (dates to be confirmed by email by the Competition Director).
87. Suppliers are expected to sticker medal winning wines until the vintage or lot runs out.
88. Any advertising, promotion or publicity relating to or referring to medals, awards or accolades won in this competition must not be false, misleading or deceptive.
89. New World Wine Awards Gold, Silver and Bronze medal stickers and the Premium NZ Selection Gold, Silver and Bronze medal stickers will be available to purchase from 5 August 2019. Order form details will be emailed by the Competition Director with the judging results.
90. A roll of 1,000 stickers will be sent to the supplier of each Gold and Silver medal winning wine with their medal certificate. The cost of these stickers is included in the entry fee. The stickers and certificates will be sent by post and will be dispatched week commencing 2 September 2019.
91. The New World Wine Awards Gold, Silver and Bronze medal designs and the Premium NZ Selection Gold, Silver and Bronze medal designs are owned by Foodstuffs NZ. Medal stickers can only be purchased from the authorised supplier whose details will be advised by email on 5 August 2019.
92. Medal sticker images for social, digital and print use are available on request from email@example.com
93. New World Wine Awards, New World Wine Awards 2019, Premium NZ Selection and New World are brands owned by Foodstuffs NZ. The use of these brands in any form must be authorised in writing by Foodstuffs NZ. Requests can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org
94. Any producer or supplier that breaches the rules of the 2019 New World Wine Awards will be disqualified, have medals withdrawn and may be prevented from entering the competition in future.
95. All wines entered into the New World Wine Awards competition may be subject to verification of compliance with the regulations of the competition by auditors appointed by the organisers of the competition.
96. The entrant agrees that organisers of the New World Wine Awards and/or their auditors may inspect stocks and uplift samples of wines bearing the same name details as the entry held at the premises of the entrant and inspect records of wines bearing the same name details as the entry. They agree to facilitate such an inspection at a mutually convenient time within five days of the date of such request.
97. Wines available for retail sale may be purchased in the course of the audit.
98. In the event of a judged wine being found to be inconsistent with wine produced under the same label in that vintage, that wine will be disqualified, have medals withdrawn and may be prevented from entering the competition in future. Only in the instance that the entrant supplier, producer or agent can prove to the Chair’s satisfaction in every respect that the wine came from the same source and is made, blended and bottled consistently will the wine not be disqualified. Any costs incurred in this process will be paid by the supplier, producer or agent.
