Welcome to the New World Beer & Cider Awards, a unique competition celebrating great beer and cider from around New Zealand and overseas. Now in its fourth year, the awards invites breweries and cidermakers, large and small, to enter.

These awards support this innovative, sophisticated and fast-changing sector by rewarding all Gold medal winners fitting the entry criteria with national distribution through 135 New World stores. These Gold medal brews will gain extensive brand exposure through active instore promotion and comprehensive marketing for the awards’ four-week promotional period.

All breweries and cidermakers with beers and ciders fitting the entry criteria are encouraged to enter the competition. You don’t need to be an existing supplier to New World or Foodstuffs – new suppliers are very welcome and actively encouraged!

Michael Donaldson

Beer writer and author Michael Donaldson (Beer Nation, The Big Book of Home Brewing) will chair our independent panel of 15 expert judges and 10 associate judges over two days of judging. Our judges have a vast and impressive range of industry experience. They are Brian Watson (Good George), Soren Eriksen (8 Wired), Stephen Wood (Hallertau), Tracy Banner (Sprig & Fern), Sam Williamson (Sawmill), Mason Pratt (Emerson’s), Jason Bathgate (McLeod’s), Shane Morley (Steam Brewing), Jono Galuszka (beer writer), Geoff Griggs (beer writer, NHC chief judge), Wendy Roigard (Valkyrie), Kieran Haslett-Moore (North End). The Cider and Perry entries will be judged by Gabe Cook (The Ciderologist), Justin Oliver (Free Range Wines) and Merophy Hyslop (Redwood Cider). In addition, the experienced Craig Bowen is our Chief Steward ensuring the competition is run to the highest international industry standards and judges don’t taste any of their own beer or cider entered into the competition.

Each entry will be blind judged and assessed on its qualities using a collaborative approach evaluating technical excellence, balance and, most importantly, drinkability. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded to suitably worthy entries and the coveted Champion will be awarded to the finest entry in each class.

All beers and ciders entered into the competition must be packaged and labelled for retail sale. Each entry must be able to supply the minimum volume within the required timeframe in the event of being awarded a Gold medal. This is to ensure sufficient stock for our thirsty New World customers! Last year over 127,000 bottles and cans of fantastic Gold medal-winning beer and cider were sold through New World supermarkets nationally in the first four weeks of the awards being announced.

All Gold medal winners fitting the entry criteria will be warehoused in Foodstuffs Distribution Centres (DC) and guaranteed distribution to all liquor-selling New World stores nationwide for the awards’ four-week promotional period. These brews will be displayed and highlighted in store with eye-catching point of sale to help customers readily find and purchase these fantastic brews. In addition New World promotes winning brews through an extensive marketing and publicity campaign.

The New World Beer & Cider Awards is a consumer-focussed competition with an expert judging panel. It enables brewers and cidermakers to make their top quality, medal-winning beer and ciders available to a wide variety of customers, while paving the way for a future partnership with one of New Zealand’s leading liquor retailers. We encourage you to enter!
